She holds two M.A. degrees\, one in Polish Philology and Anthropology of Culture from the University of Warsaw\, and the other one in acting and drama from the Warsaw Theater Academy. She taught young adults the elements of self-expression and interaction based on living values in her original program\, which was popular in Warsaw schools. Other professional interests include youth in theater and drama\, self-expression\, and values-based living. SUMMARY:A Celebration of Avrom Sutzkever’s Yiddish Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special event celebrating the Yiddish poetry of Avrom Sutzkever in conjunction with the San Diego International Jewish Film Festival. Meet Dr. Miriam Trinh\, a meyven of Avrom Sutzkever’s poetry and Yiddish poetry in general\, in conversation with Christa Whitney\, Emily Felder\, Hadas Kalderon\, and Jana Mazurkiewicz Meisaroish. The discussion will explore Avrom Sutzkever’s poetry\, his importance as a public figure and representative of Yiddish culture in Israel and around the world\, and his lasting legacy in Yiddish and in translation. \nTo learn more about Avrom Sutzkever’s life\, poetry\, and legacy\, check out the film Ver Vet Blaybn? (Who Will Remain?) screened in-person on Feb. 10 and 14 and streamed Feb. 10-20 as part of the San Diego International Jewish Film Festival. \nThis event is a collaboration of the San Diego Jewish Film Festival\, Yiddish Book Center\, Yiddish Arts and Academics Association of North America (YAAANA)\, and Yiddishland California. \nMiriam Trinh has taught Yiddish language and literature since 1999\, in Paris\, Oxford\, Strassbourg\, Vilna\, New York\, Baltimore\, Tel Aviv and is currently teaching Yiddish at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Miriam Trinh has published works in the field of Modern Yiddish Literature and especially on Holocaust literature. She is also engaged in translation from and into Yiddish. \nChrista P. Whitney\, is the Producer and Co-Director of Ver Vet Blaybn? (Who Will Remain?) and the director of the Yiddish Book Center’s Wexler Oral History Project\, a growing collection of more than 1\,000 in-depth video interviews about Yiddish language and culture with people of all ages and backgrounds. \nEmily Felder\, is the Editor and Co-Director of Ver Vet Blaybn? (Who Will Remain?) whose whose work as a documentary film editor has been screened in museums\, libraries\, and schools across the country. She is now an editor and videographer based in Los Angeles\, where she continues to make films. \nHadas Kalderon\, is the Producer of Ver Vet Blaybn? (Who Will Remain?) and the granddaughter of renowned poet Avrom Sutzkever. DESCRIPTION:This new program offers a rare intimate setting to hear two of the most sought after voices in the contemporary Yiddish scene –  world-renowned Klezmatics’ front-man Lorin Sklamberg and Latvian chanteuse Sasha Lurje – presenting songs that speak to finding power in challenging moments. The Jewish people have centuries of experience dealing with difficult times\, and song has always been a way to give voice to our struggles and hopes for a better future. These diverse songs\, ranging from the contemporary to early-modern period\, help us contextualize the present moment and remind us we will make it through to better times\, as we always have.\n \nIn cooperation with UCSD Jewish Studies Program\, SAJAC\, Sunrise Foundation for Education and the Arts and L’Chaim Magazine.\n\nCost:  \nIn- Person: $30 \nOnline (through Zoom): $18 donation \nAbout the Band: \nThe band is led by Lorin Sklamberg\, famous for his work as the lead singer of the Klezmatics\, as well as an accordionist\, Chief Sound Archivist at YIVO and pioneer of the Yiddish revival. He is joined by two Berlin-based leaders of the klezmer scene – vocalist Sasha Lurje and fiddler Craig Judelman. Ms. Lurje (of Riga\, Latvia) brings to the stage her fire\, talent and charisma\, as well as a deep knowledge of Yiddishkeit learned first hand from the last of the old troubadours. DESCRIPTION:In each class\, we will learn how to read and pronounce Yiddish\, listen and understand the various dialects it is spoken\, and learn Yiddish’s rich and extensive vocabulary and grammar for reading\, writing\, and practical use. We will use the textbook “In Eynem”\, a landmark interactive new textbook from the Yiddish Book Center\, the education feature on the Yiddish Duolingo course\, and a variety of sources from Yiddish history\, prose\, song\, and current events. We will go from learning the alef-beys to holding a conversation\, and enjoying all the fruits of the Yiddishland. \nPrice: $25 for each class or $100 for a 6-session package for early bird registration (available until November 25 ) or $125 for the 6-session package if registering after November 25. \nTeacher: Zach Golden \nZach Golden is a rabbi at Yiddishkeit-based experimental synagogue and cultural center Der Nister in Los Angeles\, and assistant to the editor of the Yiddish Forverts. A learner and enthusiast of Yiddish for many years\, he believes strongly that there is an intrinsic value to the language and culture. He has facilitated a Yiddish learning group during his time at Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies\, and is also an experienced teacher of Hebrew.
