Workshop on Yiddish Syntax
In this intensive workshop on Yiddish syntax we will focus on the word order. The rule that every Yiddish student learns in the very beginning is that “a verb stands on the second place in a sentence.” But in practice there are more nuances to it. There are “zero words” that come first but do not count in the word order, there is an inversion in complex sentences, and idiomatic inversion. We will speak about the theory moving from simple to more advanced examples, and then practice with articles and texts from Yiddish literature. Each participant will receive individual feedback on their homework.
When: Sundays, December 4 and 11, 10.30 a.m. – 12.00 p.m. PT (12:30- 2:00 p.m. CT, 1:30-3:00 p.m. ET)
