Songs of The Jewish Ukrainian Heartland
a Klezmer Concert by Michael Alpert, Sasha Lurje and Craig Judelman
Renowned Klezmer musicians from Berlin perform to support Ukrainians who fled to San Diego.
We are honored to host “Songs of The Jewish Ukrainian Heartland”, presented by world famous Klezmers coming to us all the way from Berlin – Michael Alpert, Sasha Lurje and Craig Judelman. The event will take place in person at a residential location in Scripps Ranch and virtually via Zoom.
In this program three of the world’s most sought after Klezmer musicians stand in solidarity with our Ukrainian friends fighting for their freedom. They will sing old time Klezmer tunes originating from Ukraine, songs of forbidden loves, the wonders of nature and looming dangers – songs that have sadly never been less relevant.
This is a family friendly event. We would like to thank the UCSD Jewish Studies Program for generously co-sponsoring the concert. This week only, 10% of each transaction (event ticket sales, raffle ticket sales, artwork sales) will be donated to Ukrainian refugees in San Diego.
Musicians:
Michael Alpert is one of the most well-known living Yiddish culture bearers, who has been very involved in the revitalization of Yiddish music and dance on both coasts of the US and abroad since its inception in the late 70’s. Known for his work with Kapelye, Brave Old World, Itzhak Perlman and more, Alpert is the 2015 recipient of the Nation Heritage Award. Alpert will be joined by celebrated Latvian singer Sasha Lurje and violinist, composer and arranger Craig Judelman. Lurie and Judelman have been critical members and driving forces of the thriving Berlin Klezmer scene.
After teaching and performing together at Klezmer festivals and workshops around the World, from Israel to Sao Paulo, Krakow, Montreal, New York and everywhere in between, these artists formed this trio in 2020. Now they join together in the midst of another tragedy, embarking on a rare West Coast tour to stand in solidarity with their friends and loved ones under the clouds of war.
