Intermediate-Advanced Yiddish Conversation with Osian Sharma

For students looking to practise their speaking skills or to enjoy conversation with other Yiddish-learners, this class will involve a series of fun exercises and games to put vocabulary and grammar to use. Each class will introduce a topic through a Yiddish song or short text, followed by open discussion, some imaginative games and hopefully no curses!

Teacher: Osian Sharma

Osian (Oshn) Evans Sharma is a Yiddish teacher from the UK. He has studied Yiddish at University College London, and courses in Tel Aviv, Berlin and Paris. He has led Yiddish poetry courses online for Babel’s Blessing Language School and in-person workshops at the Shtetl Berlin Festival, the Maison de la Culture Yiddish and the Yiddish Sof-Vokh UK, which he also helps to organise. He teaches at the summer programme ‘Ot Azoy’ and recently completed a pedagogy fellowship at the Yiddish Book Center (Amherst, MA).

Yiddish Classes — Save the Dates

In this course, we will learn to read and write, hold short conversations and begin growing our knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and culture. We will begin with printed and cursive letters, basic greetings and how to conjugate verbs in the present tense. We will also learn numbers, colors, dates and times—and we will play games, recite songs and poems, and begin to see glimpses of the Yiddish world, past and present.

Teacher: Zach Golden

Zach Golden was the Deputy Yiddish Editor of the Forward (Forverts) from 2022 to 2024, ordained as a rabbi at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles in 2020, and is the co-founder of Der Nister Downtown Jewish Center, a synagogue and cultural center in Downtown Los Angeles.

About the Yiddish Language

Yiddish is both old and new, traditional and innovative.Yiddish developed about a thousand years ago in Ashkenaz. Over time, the language traveled wherever Ashkenazi Jews migrated. Moreover, it is still spoken today by more than a million people.
In addition, it is studied worldwide by people who want access to Yiddish literature, music, theater, humor, history, and film.
While Yiddish uses the Hebrew alphabet, it is a Germanic language. Because of this, English speakers often find it easier to learn than expected.

Our Teaching Approach

We are proud to offer students the opportunity to study Yiddish from beginner to advanced levels. Our programs include reading circles, conversation classes, theater workshops, children’s classes, song workshops, and even Yiddish yoga.
