Yiddish for Advanced Students
We are happy to announce our intensive autumn program, coming up this October. Though we are still hosting our program via distance learning, our team is bringing you an amazing lineup of Yiddish classes, activities, and theater programs.
This package includes eight sessions of a 90 min. language class, eight sessions of a 60 min. conversation class, and eight sessions of a 60 min. intonation class for advanced students.
Price: $350 for general admission, $325 for early bird registration (until Sep. 20) and $315 for students with a valid ID (until Sep. 20)
Keep in mind that all classes and workshops will take place online via Zoom.

Sheva Zucker’s Bio: Dr. Sheva Zucker is the author of the textbooks Yiddish: An Introduction to the Language, Literature & Culture, Vols. I & II. She has taught and lectured on Yiddish language, literature, and culture on five continents and has taught Yiddish for many years in the Uriel Weinreich Program in Yiddish Language, Literature and Culture, currently under the auspices of Bard College and the YIVO Institute in NYC. She served as the executive director of the League for Yiddish and the editor of its magazine Afn Shvel from 2005 to 2020. Her research and translations focus mostly on women in Yiddish literature.
Advanced Yiddish Class
Teacher: Sheva Zucker

Description: There is nothing more dramatic than the life of an individual. In this course we will read autobiographical writings, choosing from the memoirs of both male and female memoirists such as Yekhezkl Kotik, Shmerke Kaczerginski, Gina Medem, Kadye Molodowsky Puah Rakovski, and others, ranging from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. Grammar to be studied will be drawn from these writings.

Shmues Class for Advanced Students
Teacher: Miriam Isaacs
Time: Monday-Thursday, 12 p.m.-1 p.m. PDT (3 p.m. EDT, 8 p.m. in the U.K., 9 p.m. in most of Europe, 10 p.m. in Israel)
Description: In this eight session advanced shmues course, students will first read poems by Yiddish poet and short story writer Rokhl Korn (1898-1986), and then discuss the various contexts in which she wrote these poems, including the history of Poland, the USSR, and Sweden. In the latter sessions, students will practice gossiping in colloquial Yiddish using folk expressions. Students will also talk about Yiddish theater. We will learn about the origins of the purimshpil, dramas of the haskalah, Avrom Goldfadn, shund, Jacob Gordin, art theater, Soviet Yiddish theater, and comedy. This class will be conducted entirely in Yiddish.

Bio: Miriam Isaacs is a scholar, writer, translator, and educator specializing in Yiddish language and culture. She is a native Yiddish speaker and has taught Yiddish courses at the University of Maryland and lectured internationally. Dr. Isaacs has given lectures and workshops for Yiddish New York, UC Berkeley, the Library of Congress, the Jewish Genealogical Society, among others.
Bio: Daniel Galay was born in Buenos Aires and has lived in Israel since 1965. He writes poetry, plays, and texts for music-theater in Hebrew and Yiddish, and libretti for operas. He is chairman of the Association of Yiddish writers and Journalists in Israel and is an expert in Yiddish Intonation.
Intonation Workshop for Advanced Students
Teacher: Daniel Galay
Monday-Thursday, starting on October 4th.
Time: 10-11 a.m. PDT (1:00 p.m. EDT, 6 p.m. in the U.K., 7 p.m. in most of Europe, 8 p.m. in Israel)
Description: In this eight-session workshop, students will learn how to improve their Yiddish intonation skills. They will work on pronouncing single words, questions, different grammatical cases, and negations. Additionally, students will learn about the influence of foreign intonations and boost their self-confidence when speaking Yiddish. Good intonation is the first step to become a Yiddish actor!
